9 practical ways NZ small businesses can use AI in Marketing

AI isn’t just for tech giants or Silicon Valley startups anymore. For NZ small business owners, it’s a smart way to save time, reach the right people, and do more with your marketing, without blowing your budget.

Whether you’re writing social captions, running Facebook ads, or trying to get LLM’s to recommend your company, AI can give you a real edge.

Here are 9 practical ways NZ businesses are using it, plus how we can help you get the best results.

1. Smarter writing

You are probably already using AI to support much more than brainstorming and first drafts. Businesses are using it to plan content calendars, prepare briefs, draft blogs and social posts, develop imagery prompts, check content against brand guidelines and streamline approvals. More advanced workflows can even prepare content as a draft in WordPress for final human review.

How we can help: At Alexanders, we can help you develop a content strategy that stands out from AI slop: don’t rely on AI 600-word blogs. Your videos, social and email marketing need hit the mark at the right level of readiness, that will be picked up by AI. Using AI as an aid, we research your prospects’ pain points, plan blog topics around their needs and stages of readiness, create a custom GPT that writes in your tone of voice, and set up an effective blog module in your website with help to automate manual tasks like content loading.

We combine AI efficiency with human judgement and creativity, reducing production time while ensuring your content remains useful, credible and distinctly yours.

2. Personalised marketing that actually works

AI can tailor your emails, ads, or website content to each customer segment’s behaviour, improving engagement and conversion rates.

Example: You may have a Google ad group or a new service targeting a specific niche audience.

How we can help: We work out segment drivers and advise on the landing page layout/copy and imagery, so your ad has a higher click through rate AND conversion rate once they arrive. We help you manage your Google ads and give you advice on website improvements (without needing to rebuild).

3. Clearer customer insights

AI can crunch large amounts of data to reveal patterns in customer behaviour, interests, and pain points. In the past you may have spent a chunk on market research to discover these pain points. In my experience, AI gives a really good summary of pain points that you can build from.

Example: AI might help you discern from a list of benefits and features which ones are most likely to appeal to different audiences with different pain points.

How we can help: We translate your promotional and website messages into more powerful brand stories that resonate; no data science degree required.

4. Chatbots & customer support that’s always on

AI-powered chatbots can answer FAQs instantly, even when you’re sleeping – freeing up your team for real human help when it’s needed. Over time, chat bots learn to handle up to 80% of customer service activities, freeing up your staff from mundane tasks to focus on value-add activites.

Example: A local gas supplier could have a chatbot on their site that answers “what steps are there to changing gas supplier?” in seconds.

How we can help: We can help you choose and integrate the right chatbot tools – or build one into your site, so support is always available, even when your team isn’t.

5. Content creation – creating video avatars / cloned twin

AI can now create realistic video avatars or “digital twins” that speak directly to your audience without the need for constant filming. This is ideal for scaling video marketing while keeping messaging consistent.

Example: A mortgage broker could create an AI version of themselves to record weekly market updates, saving hours of filming while still delivering a personal touch.

How we can help:

We build AI avatars to match your tone, style and brand voice with a kiwi accent. Then we capture secondary footage and use this to create regular videos without you having to appear on the camera again!

6. SEO & website optimisation

Whilst AI can help suggest keywords, I’ve found these to be poor. However, once we have a keyword plan (human generated), AI can help to write meta descriptions, or even suggest how to restructure pages to rank higher on Google.

Example: A hotel could optimise a new landing page for related searches like “Christchurch 5-star accommodation” to support the ranking of a core pillar page.

How we can help: AI keyword results are in my opinion very lacking. They don’t have the experience and knowledge about intent and common keywords. Their recommendations are often unfounded and over the recommended character count when we are looking for volume or niche phrases. We deliver human insight to your strategy, then use AI to help expedite the production process. See our SEO services.

7. Predictive analytics

AI can forecast what your customers are likely to do next, like whether they’re about to buy, or bail.

Example: A subscription box business could predict when a customer might cancel, and send a special offer to keep them.

How we can help: We help you turn your inactive database into an active database – with smart campaigns triggered by CRM fields, behaviour and lifecycle signals. Your database is gold, and seldom well-utilised.

8. Visual content & design tools

AI can assist with creating graphics, video, or branded templates quickly, so your team can post more often, without waiting on a designer.

Example: A café could use AI to whip up Instagram story templates for daily specials or weekend events.

How we can help: We help you choose and train your AI design tools that suit your brand and your team, building Canva templates you can edit and a social media strategy you can implement (or get us to), so you can produce content faster without compromising on quality.

9. Better email marketing

AI can segment your audience and personalise email content to increase open rates and conversions.

Example: A software company could send one follow-up email to users who’ve logged in, and a different one to those who haven’t.

How we can help: We craft automated journeys that respond to real user behaviour, so every email feels relevant, and helps move your audience closer to action. Too many companies spend a bomb on social media campaigns, but don’t have the nurturing sequences to harness the “not ready now thanks” brigade. It costs a lot to generate each lead. Many of the “not nows” can be converted with a bit of love.
